Chief Executive-designate announces post-handover appointements to the
bench

Macau's Chief Executive-designate, Edmund Ho Hau-wah, announced the
post-handover appointment of 24 judges, including the three-member panel
of the Court of Final Appeal.
         The Court of Final Appeal (CFA) will be headed by 38-year old
Sam Hou-fai, a locally trained judge. The two other CFA judges are
30-year old Chu Kin, who was also locally trained, and 45-year old
Viriato Lima, a veteran judge from Portugal.

Construction of handover facilities enters final stage
 
Construction of Macau's various  handover facilities has entered its final stage,
a spokesman for the Macau government's Handover Co-ordination Office
said on Thursday.
        The work on a tent-like 6,600-square metre structure for the
handover ceremony at midnight on December 19 was nearing completion.
The structure, which will resemble a huge Chinese lantern, was
designed by Macau-based Portuguese architect Vicente Bravo.
        It has the height of an 10-storey building and can
accommodate about 2,500 people.

China to mobilise some 10,000 armed police and border guards during
Macau handover

China will mobilise some 10,000 armed police and border guards during
Macau's handover in December, a spokesman for the operation said in
Zhuhai on Thursday.
        Colonel Lin Jieyuan, commander of the Guangdong Province Public
Security Bureau's borders guards, said that 140 marine police units and
90 armoured vehicles would be part of the operation on the Chinese side
of the Macau-Zhuhai border and other areas in the Pearl River delta in
the run-up to the handover.

Governor of Macau to visit China late next month

Macau Governor Gen. Vasco Rocha Vieira will pay an official visit to
China at the end of next month, about one month before Macau's reversion
from Portuguese to Chinese administration, a diplomatic source said on
Wednesday.
        "The visit has already been decided, but the dates have not yet
been fixed," the source said about Gen. Vieira's fourth official visit
to China since assuming the governorship of Macau in 1991.

Second batch of handover commemorative coins to be issued next month

A second batch of Macau handover commemorative coins will be issued
next month, a spokesman for the Macau Monetary and Foreign Exchange
Authority said on Wednesday.
        The coins minted in Canada will include a new two pataca
denomination coin. All the coins - 10, 20 and 50 avos (cents) and one,
five, two and 10 patacas, will show a number of  sites and objects in
Macau, such as the Dr Sun Yat-sen Memorial Park, Macau-Taipa Friendship
Bridge, Macau Government Palace and the Ruins of St.Paul's church, as
well a a jetfoil, a Macau Grand Prix racing car and two greyhounds of
Macau's canidrome.

Chief Executive-designate describes Macau ties with EU as a "competitive
advantage''

Chief Executive-designate Edmund Ho Hau-wah has described Macau's close
ties with the European Union as a "competitive advantage."
     Ho made the remark during a reception held by the local financial
sector on Wednesday in commemoration of last week's 50th anniversary of
the founding of the People's Republic of China.
